KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Dr. William "Bill" Snyder, a former University of Tennessee chancellor and beloved house organist at the Tennessee Theatre, has died. He was 93 years old.

Snyder was well known for his performances on the theatre's Mighty Wurlitzer organ from 1979 until his retirement in 2018. He became the chairman of the UT Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics in 1970 and served in the role until being appointed dean of the College of Engineering in 1983. He also served as acting vice chancellor for academic affairs and was appointed UT chancellor in 1992, a position he held until 1999.
