There was chaos in Limbe town as many businesses have closed in fear of possible riots, ahead of the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) expected announcement of the September 16 election results this evening.
Shoppers and vendors are seen hurrying through the streets, making their way home. Schools around the town have also been closed, and school children are scattered throughout the streets.
The unrest reportedly began when a group of men, suspected to be members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), started chasing rivals from the minibus parking lots, commonly known as “Mgodi.”
Many shop owners have since shut down their businesses and left the area.
