Australian electric car owners will soon be able to use their vehicle battery as a cash cow, selling electricity into the grid and even powering their own home through a new AGL pilot program.

The energy giant has launched the trial with four car manufacturers, enabling drivers to connect their car battery to the grid and power their homes using stored energy.

“Customers will be able to charge their car when electricity is cheap or charge their car from solar panels on their roof and then store that energy and use the energy to power their home later in the day,” an AGL spokesperson said.

“This technology is going to help fortify our grid as we move to net [20]35 and our net zero [20]50 targets,” Hyundai’s Scott Nargar said.
