Law enforcement officials said the deadly shooting at an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas, Texas, is being investigated as a "targeted" attack.
Officials say a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop and shot three detainees on the morning of Sept. 24. One detainee was killed and two were critically wounded, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The shooter, who has not been identified, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the agency said.
FBI Director Kash Patel said an "initial review of the evidence shows an ideological motive behind this attack.” Patel posted images on X of unfired ammunition located at the scene, including one unspent casing inscribed with the words “ANTI ICE.”
Republican lawmakers, Trump administration officials and others have cast blame partly on rhetoric "demonizing" federal immigration agents. The incident was the second shooting at an ICE facility in Texas in recent weeks and comes amid what authorities describe as a rise in assaults on the agencies employees.
"While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop," said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Vice President JD Vance said in a statement on X that the "obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop." He added, "I'm praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families."
