The Indian government has extended General Anil Chauhan's tenure as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) until May 30, 2026. This decision was confirmed by the Ministry of Defence, which stated that the extension is effective immediately and will last until further orders. General Chauhan, who has been serving in this role since September 30, 2022, was originally appointed for a three-year term.
Born in 1961, General Chauhan was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1981 and has had a notable career with various key command and staff positions. He is the second individual to hold the CDS position, following General Bipin Rawat. Throughout his service, General Chauhan has received several prestigious awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, recognizing his exemplary contributions to the military.
As CDS, General Chauhan is focused on enhancing joint operations among the three armed forces and has set 196 targets to improve their integration. One of his significant initiatives includes the establishment of theatre commands, which will streamline military operations under a unified command structure.
General Chauhan's current term was set to conclude on September 30, but with this extension, he will continue to lead the Department of Military Affairs as well. He is expected to retire from the position at the age of 65, which he will reach in May 2024.
