With the battle lines drawn in a looming GST fight, Western Australia’s Treasurer Rita Saffioti is confident its 75 cent floor is safe – but she’s rallying the troops anyway.
On Wednesday, Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced the terms of reference for the Productivity Commission’s review of the 75 cent GST floor and no-worse-off guarantee implemented by the Morrison government in 2018 after WA’s share of the tax crashed below 30 cents in the dollar.
The deal has retained bipartisan support since, despite pressure mounting on the Commonwealth from economists and other states due to the no-worse-off guarantee ballooning to $60 billion – one of the fastest-rising drains on federal coffers.
