RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A new report by the CDC reported that syphilis cases in newborns increased again for the twelfth year in a row in 2024 with almost 4,000 cases.

According the the CDC, newborn syphilis is a deadly, yet "preventable consequence" of what they say is a part of the nation’s ongoing sexually transmitted infections (STI) epidemic.

From the year 2020 to 2024 STI cases grew by over 55,000, according to data collected by the CDC.

In the year 2024, cases of newborn syphilis were as follows: • Up almost 2% over 2023, lower than double-digit increases that occurred in some recent years. • Up almost 700% since 2015 when just 495 cases were reported.
