Australia's bid to host a major global climate conference may depend on diplomatic "horse-trading" as government officials scramble to break a deadlock with rival Turkey.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is due to meet his Turkish counterpart on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly gathering on Thursday (AEST) to hopefully resolve an impasse over the hosting rights for the talks.

Mr Albanese wants to host next year's COP31 event in conjunction with Pacific nations, which are bearing the brunt of rising sea levels and more frequent storms as global temperatures rise.

UN processes dictate that a country from the "Western European and Other States" group, which includes Australia, will host the 2026 event.

The decision on hosting rights is made by consensus only, and Turkey
