WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) announced on Wednesday the creation of a national domestic violence hotline exclusively for American Indians and Alaska Natives, the first of its kind.

A grant of $15 million was awarded to fund the project for five years.

According to a study from the National Institute of Justice, four out of five Native American women experience domestic violence— a disproportionally higher rate than non-native women.

HHS said in a press release the hotline is available 24/7 at 1-844-762-8483, and staffed with trained advocates with expertise in tribal culture.

The hotline will offer “confidential, toll-free support via call, text, and online chat,” HHS said.
