The Chattanooga Police Department announced their 2-year-old K9 Buck died from medical complications Wednesday. The Labrador served CPD for a little over a year.

On the day before his death, Buck had gastrointestinal upset and appeared lethargic to his handler, according to a statement from the department.

They took him to his primary care veterinarian, who observed "significant abnormalities," and referred Buck to a specialist.

His care team eventually determined that he was experiencing " septic peritonitis ," which progressed to " Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC). " In other words, he had a life-threatening complication with an extremely high mortality rate.

"Despite all measures taken to save his life, Buck did not survive," the department said.
