BESSEMER, Ala. ( WBRC ) - A new initiative is launching in Bessemer to help domestic violence victims.

District Attorney Lynneice Washington announced a new program Wednesday named SAFEguard. It will connect survivors with services and educate the community about domestic violence.

She said there are currently no programs located in Bessemer for domestic violence victims.

“Sometimes and oftentimes, the offender is the breadwinner. They have taken their self-esteem. They will tell them they’re ugly or not valued,” said Washington.

The program is in partnership with UAB, the Hispanic and Immigrant Center of Alabama, and the Women Under Construction Network.
