SAC COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — There is a new sheriff in Sac County, Iowa; Katie Stange was appointed on Wednesday morning.

The County’s Board of Supervisors unanimously approved her appointment. She was working as the interim sheriff after Jonathan Meyer resigned on September 2, shortly after being sworn in on July 22.

Stange was previously a chief deputy for Sac County. The deputy auditor told KCAU 9 that a two-week period is underway to allow residents to file a petition for a special election since the sheriff’s position is ultimately an elected seat.

That period ends on October 7. Now, if there are no petitions, then Stange will remain sheriff until the November 2026 election.

There is a primary election for sheriff set for June 2026; whoever wins that will move on to the general elect
