A safe house allegedly operated by an organised crime syndicate has been raided, with detectives seizing a major cache of weapons .

Police have been searching for 'the Armoury' since March, when a separate investigation revealed that an unknown house in Melbourne was storing an arsenal of weapons.

Illicit Firearms Squad detectives searched for the home for six months before a breakthrough led to a residential address in Glen Waverley, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

As detectives executed a search warrant on the house on September 22, they allegedly discovered a locked weapons room guarded by a "sitter".

Two people from Glen Waverley, a 33-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were arrested at the scene.
