Doña Ana County is one of five sites that will house data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence as part of the Stargate project announced by President Donald Trump.
Trump announced the project in January calling it a consortium of OpenAI, Oracle and Japan's Softbank which would spend $500 billion to build data centers in the U.S. to handle expanded AI workload. The original plan was to construct 10 data centers (to grow to 20), the first of which is already under construction in Abilene, Texas. Other sites will be built in Shackleford County, Texas and an unnamed site in the Midwest, according to a Sept. 23 the news release from OpenAI.
