A new Summer Termination Program will prevent electric utilities from disconnecting qualifying customers during the summer months.

Acting Gov. Tahesha Way signed a bill into law on Wednesday that creates the program, modeled on the Winter Termination Program. Both programs prevent utility companies from disconnecting service for certain customers during winter and summer months.

Electric, water and sewer utility companies will not be able to terminate service to customers receiving certain forms of government assistance between June 15 and Aug. 31. The wintertime version of the program runs from Nov. 15 and March 15.

“This legislation will ensure that, during the hot summer months, residents can keep their air conditioning and water running,” Way said in a statement.
