Oakland police Chief Floyd Mitchell has submitted to the police commission an amended request for his department’s pursuit policy
The board earlier this year declined to make any changes to Oakland’s police pursuit policy. The chief now wants his officers to be allowed to initiate a pursuit on their own, then immediately get supervisor approval to continue.
Safety advocates are praising the potential changes.
“We need support for this policy making sure the police can do their work,” said Carl Chan, Oakland Chinatown Chamber Foundation president. “Lets not put handcuffs on our officers. Lets help them to help us and to stop all these criminals coming to our city.”
