TORONTO — Red Sox rookie catcher Carlos Narváez went from fighting for a roster spot in spring training to blowing by his career high in innings caught.
Narváez ’s 926 innings behind the plate this season are 360 ⅔ innings more than he’s ever caught in one season in pro ball.
The 26-year-old, who Boston acquired from the Yankees in December, had appeared in just six major league games before this season. However, he’s become a leader not only of the pitching staff but in the clubhouse.
Manager Alex Cora was asked if he’s surprised a rookie with Narváez’s lack of big league reps was able to become a leader almost immediately.
