SEATTLE — Chain-link fences are now blocking several alleys in downtown Seattle as city officials respond to complaints about crime, including open-air drug use and alley fires.

The fences, installed at the request of the Seattle Police Department and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), are legal under city code, which allows officials to restrict access to alleys based on criminal activity, unsafe structures, or health hazards. Signs posted on the fences warn that trespassing carries fines of up to $1,000 or 90 days in jail. Residents, workers, utilities, and first responders retain access.
