London Mayor Sadiq Khan says U.S. President Donald Trump "has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic, and he's Islamophobic."
Khan was speaking Wednesday to a UK pool reporter a day after Trump took a swipe at him during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly, saying: "Look at London where you have a terrible mayor, a terrible, terrible mayor and it’s been so changed, so changed. Now they want to go to sharia law, but you’re in a different country. You can’t do that."
When the reporter asked Khan if Trump's comments were Islamophobic, Khan replied: "When people say things, when people act in a certain way, when people behave in a way, you've got to believe them."
The reporter pressed Khan further, asking: "So you're saying he is Islamophobic?" to which Khan replied "I think, you know, President Trump has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic, and he's Islamophobic."
Khan has never suggested introducing sharia law, which refers to Islamic religious law regulating public and private life.
On Wednesday, Khan told Sky News that he is “a Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multicultural, progressive successful city.”
There are a number of sharia councils in the U.K. that deal with marriage and family issues according to Islamic teachings.
They are similar to Jewish Beth Din rabbinical courts that deal with similar issues within Britain’s Jewish community.
The decisions of sharia councils are not binding under British law.
