AVON LAKE – It was a bit like the old “show and tell” days when representatives from the Avon Lake Historical Society showed up to the Avon Lake City Council meeting to designate a piece of the Avon Lake Power Plant as an historic landmark. The red, aircraft warning beacon that was mounted atop the power plant smokestack was officially designated as an historic piece and will find a temporary home in the Avon Lake Public Library.
Council member Dave Kos, who represents the city to the historical society, opened the presentation by thanking ALHS president Tony Tomankek and chair of the Historical Preservation Committee Bobbe Rudge.
Tomanek began his presentation with a bit of history on the power plant, which was built between 1925 and 1926 by the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company.
