HARAHAN, La. — A Jefferson Parish Schools employee was arrested Tuesday at Harahan Elementary School, according to a district spokesperson.

The employee was identified as Teran James, 34, who is listed on the school’s website as a fifth-grade teacher. James was released from Jefferson Parish Jail and did not have to post a $1,000 bond due to prison overcrowding, court documents show.

An arrest report says James put a student in a chokehold and pulled him from the cafeteria to the front office. Harahan Police went to the school Wednesday and the school district confirmed he was arrested on campus.

According to arrest records, James was booked on a charge of simple battery. He also faces charges related to an outstanding traffic attachment and being a fugitive from another jurisdiction.
