WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Brooklyn native Mike Callanan spent half a decade in the Air Force, working with nearly a dozen dogs during that time.

"The way we trained the dogs in the military was very unique. It's full control of a dog," he said. "You got to trust the dog enough because he's going to save your life."

As a military police K-9 officer, Callanan says his dogs provided a special kind of protection that human soldiers could not during Vietnam.

"I can't see in the dark, but he can see in the dark and smell real good," he said.

After enlisting, Callanan completed police school and K-9 school in 1970 and began patrolling McConnell Air Force Base with a K-9 companion.
