SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. —

The Heavenly Village Cinema in South Lake Tahoe has closed after two decades, leaving local residents without a nearby movie theater and requiring them to travel to Carson City, Nevada, for screenings.

The closure came as a surprise to some.

"I'm surprised because I just told my wife, 'Oh I'm going to take you to a movie tonight.' Now I gotta go home and be a liar. Turn on the TV, I guess," said Glen Herman, a visitor to South Lake Tahoe.

But others noticed the challenges the local theater faced in recent years.

"The cinemas have faced really tough challenges since COVID, and the industry has totally changed and a lot of the films are coming out streaming before they even hit the theaters," said Dreu Murin from The Shops at Heavenly Village. "It's really jus
