Citizen advocates and leading philanthropic organizations are urging the attorneys general of California and Delaware to reject OpenAI’s plan to assign a stake in its new public-benefit corporation valued at more than $100 billion to its nonprofit arm.

As part of its planned corporate restructuring , OpenAI would make the nonprofit entity one of the most well-endowed charities worldwide. But under no circumstance should a nonprofit with those assets be tied to the San Francisco artificial-intelligence developer, the advocates and philanthropic organizations argue, as it has repeatedly put its business interests ahead of its defined mission of ensuring that AI benefits humanity.
