Corpus Christi first responders monitored a man who climbed the new Harbor Bridge and remained there for almost two hours on the afternoon of Sept. 24.

The Corpus Christi Police Department received a call at 12:37 p.m. of a man who had climbed the suspension cables of the new bridge, according to officer Madeline Vaughn.

The man was perched at the top and appeared to be sitting on the cables, she said.

The police department deployed drones from its Drone Unit to watch the man as officers from the Hostage Negotiation Team made contact with him and tried to persuade him to climb down, she said.

Traffic was shut down on the inside lanes of the bridge, senior officer Antonio Contreras said.

Corpus Christi Fire Department engines and medics were also at the scene.
