CHELAN COUNTY, Wash. — Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison says it’s too soon to declare triple-homicide suspect Travis Decker dead, despite a court filing by federal authorities suggesting otherwise.

“My apologies to the community that there was any kind of miscommunication, that somehow this had been resolved,” Morrison told KING 5’s Maddie White.

Last week, investigators discovered a body in the woods near Leavenworth, and said it is likely Decker. But Morrison says his office is still waiting on DNA results to confirm the identity. That hasn’t stopped confusion from spreading, particularly after the U.S. Marshals Service submitted a motion in federal court this week stating, “Defendant Travis Caleb Decker is deceased .”

Morrison is setting the record straight.
