Global real estate firm CBRE has been forced to confront a damaging scandal after one of its senior managers was revealed to have appeared in blackface.

Mark Curtain, a long-time executive at the company, was photographed wearing darkened make-up, an afro-style wig and a set of red headphones around his neck.

The image, which circulated via his Facebook account, dates back to 2012.

The incident came to light when an anonymous staff member raised concerns with management, claiming the photo evoked “historically racist imagery by treating racial identity as a costume or joke”.

At the time, Curtain was responsible for advisory and transaction services, a role overseeing more than 300 staff and placing him on the same leadership tier as CBRE chief executive Phil Rowland.
