Ladakh remained under tight security on Thursday after four people were shot dead and dozens injured during violent protests in Leh district of the cold desert.

Authorities imposed curfew in Leh while restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, banning gatherings of more than five people were imposed in Kargil. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed across key roads and public places.

Dozens of people from Leh have also been detained, said an official.

Violence erupted on Wednesday when protesters clashed with security forces, torching a police vehicle and the local office of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
