Matthew McConaughey's 17-year-old son Levi pestered his father about starring alongside him in The Lost Bus. The teenager makes his movie debut as Shaun, the Oscar-winning actor's on-screen son, in the disaster thriller, which is set during the 2018 wildfires in California. Paul Greengrass's film stars McConaughey and America Ferrera as a school bus driver and teacher who try to get 22 schoolchildren to safety amid the raging inferno. In an interview with BBC News, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star explained that Levi persistently asked him about the Shaun role. "I always pitch the script to my family, whatever film I'm doing," he shared. "I tell the story, and that this character I'm playing has a son. My son Levi comes to me and he says, 'Can I read for it?' I went, 'Huh.' Didn't say anything. I wanted to see how much he wanted it." After Levi asked four more times, McConaughey allowed him to submit an audition tape, on the condition that he omitted his last name. Greengrass saw the video and declared Levi was the one to play Shaun before discovering he was McConaughey's real son. The Lost Bus ended up being an even greater family affair for McConaughey, as it also features his mother Kay, 93, as Kevin's mum. According to the star, Greengrass asked if she would audition and cast her after seeing her tape. "Just to be in a scene with those two, I never thought that was something that would happen," McConaughey gushed. Since making the movie, Levi has already filmed his next feature, Way of the Warrior Kid, with Chris Pratt and Linda Cardellini. The Lost Bus will debut on Apple TV+ on 3 October.
