Police officers shot a man who held a toddler hostage with a machete during a domestic violence incident on Sept. 24 in central Phoenix, officials said.
Officers went to an apartment near 31st Avenue and Bethany Home Road around 10 p.m. and evacuated some of the occupants, according to a Phoenix police news release. They looked inside the apartment through an open door and saw a man with a toddler on his lap and holding a machete.
Police told the man to step outside with his hands up, but he didn't respond. Officers then shot the man with a less-than-lethal device, but it was ineffective. When the man didn't put down the machete and let go of the child, an officer shot him.
