Any teacher worth their salt learns as much from their students as they learn from you. They’ll teach you the power of laughter, forgiveness, humility and loyalty. And if you’re really lucky, they’ll teach you how to fish for salmon.
I was one of the lucky ones. I had Owen Hornbeck in my classroom. Every five or six years, a kid comes along who just really touches your heart. Owen was that kind of kid. He worked hard every day in school and always kept a positive attitude, even though it was challenging. He loved all things nature, and he was most at peace while hunting, fishing or skiing. Owen also had the gift of emotional intelligence. He knew how to talk with adults as well as students, which meant he asked questions and listened as much or more than he talked.
