Kudos to St. Louis’ Board of Aldermen and Mayor Cara Spencer for stepping up and confronting a serious problem facing our city: the city’s own sheriff. In passing a measure to force Sheriff Alfred Montgomery to start doing his job, the board and Spencer have finally asserted some control over this rogue elected official.
Their next move should be to start the process of transforming the sheriff’s office itself from an elected one — which makes no sense, for reasons we’ll get into in a moment — to an appointed post. That would more accurately reflect the city sheriff’s duties, which primarily involve logistical support services for the city jail and court systems.
Since taking office in January, Montgomery’s antics have looked like especially unbelievable satire.
