Toronto police issued over 3,500 tickets during a recent enforcement campaign aimed at micromobility vehicles and back-to-school safety. The campaign ran from August 25 to September 13 and focused on educating users of micromobility devices, such as bicycles, electric bikes, e-mopeds, and electric scooters, on safe road practices.
Officers issued 179 tickets specifically for micromobility violations under the Highway Traffic Act and City of Toronto by-laws. These vehicles are classified as "small, compact, low-speed vehicles." Police emphasized that all operators, whether in a motor vehicle or on a micromobility device, must adhere to the same traffic laws.
In addition to micromobility enforcement, police issued 3,355 tickets for driving offenses occurring within 150 meters of schools. This aspect of the campaign primarily targeted speeding and distracted driving, which are critical concerns as students return to school.
The enforcement initiative was launched in response to a City Council recommendation for a collaborative effort between Toronto Police and the City of Toronto. The goal was to enhance public awareness regarding safety issues related to micromobility. The campaign included public safety reminders, such as the importance of riding in the correct direction in bike lanes and not riding on sidewalks.
As the enforcement campaign concludes, Toronto police plan to continue their educational efforts and enforce traffic laws related to micromobility vehicles.
