BOSTON —
Health officials announced on Thursday that a Boston resident has tested positive for West Nile virus.
According to the Boston Public Health Commission, the resident, a man in his 50s, is being treated and his condition is improving. He has not recently traveled outside of the city.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health elevated the West Nile virus risk level in Boston to "high" last month based on mosquito samples.
Health officials urge at-risk residents to adjust outdoor activities to avoid peak mosquito hours (from dusk to dawn) and to wear long clothing.
"Even as we mark the start of fall, it remains important to take common-sense steps to protect yourself from mosquito-borne illnesses," said Dr. Bisola Ojikutu, Commissioner of Public Health for the City of Boston
