PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A man now faces up to nineteen years in prison after a jury found him guilty of child abuse.

Prosecutors say Brandon Garris was convicted by a jury today after a three-day trial. He was sentenced to between fifteen and nineteen years in prison.

In the spring of 2024, a 6-month-old baby was admitted to ECU Children’s Hospital with traumatic brain injuries beginning the night before, according to a news release. Deputies say an investigation began for suspected abusive head trauma.

The District Attorney’s Office says Garris, who was the fiancé of the baby’s mother, had been caring for the child the day symptoms began. Deputies said Garris told them he fell while holding the child, but contradicted his recount of that night to investigators.
