A pair of brothers from Texas are facing federal charges for allegedly holding a Twin Cities family at gunpoint for nine hours and stealing $8 million in cryptocurrency.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson announced federal kidnapping charges against 23-year-old Raymond Christian Garcia and 24-year-old Isiah Angelo Garcia on Thursday.

The Garcia brothers are accused of carrying out the "kidnapping and cryptocurrency heist" last Friday in Grant, a suburb of St. Paul. They were charged at the state level with kidnapping, burglary and aggravated robbery charges on Wednesday.

The crime sparked a shelter-in-place in Grant and Mahtomedi. It also prompted Mahtomedi Public Schools to cancel its homecoming football game.
