A new report released by Maryland Comptroller Brooke E. Lierman as part of her ‘State Spending Series’ has revealed that the majority of the state’s nearly 1,400 public school buildings are in deteriorating condition, with Baltimore City schools among the most underfunded and overburdened.

According to the report, 81% of schools are functionally unreliable or need repairs.

The statewide facility assessment found that:

– 271 schools (20%) are in “like new,” “good,” or “satisfactory” condition.

– 463 schools (34%) “need repairs.”

– 627 schools (46%) are considered “functionally unreliable.”

That means 1,090 schools require repair, renovation or outright replacement to meet even a “satisfactory” standard.
