The site of Danville’s first Black theater will get a state historic marker, following a vote last week by Virginia’s Board of Historic Resources.
Also, the board voted to approve two alternate sites for historic markers in Danville and Pittsylvania County, as well as wording for a previously approved marker for the Danville Canal.
The Hippodrome Theatre opened in 1917 and was built for the African American community. It was located at 215 N. Union St. downtown.
“The history of the Hippodrome site is invaluable and is worth preserving,” said Karice Luck-Brimmer, a local historian and a former member of the Board of Historic Resources. “I hold great respect for the Department of Historic Resources and their efforts to increase markers that highlight African American history.”
