SAINT PAUL, Minn. — U.S. Senator Tina Smith said Thursday that she will not vote to keep the federal government open unless Republicans make concessions on health care, as Congress races to meet the Sept. 30 deadline to avoid a shutdown.
Smith outlined her stance during an event on the steps of the Minnesota State Capitol, joined by community and faith leaders from ISAIAH, a group that supports progressive causes.
"Senate Democrats are united in not being bullied and intimidated by this administration," Smith said. "We are ready to work with them to negotiate on a path forward that actually does something to improve health care for my constituents, for Americans everywhere."
