John McGinn admits that Aston Villa have deserved criticism at the start of the season after ending their winless run with a victory against Bologna in the Europa League .

The Villa captain scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute, firing the ball past Łukasz Skorupski.

Ollie Watkins, who started on the bench, had a penalty saved by the Bologna goalkeeper in the second half, before the Italian side hit the bar through Santiago Castro moments later.

"It was important to get a win at home,” McGinn admitted to TNT Sports. “Not our strongest start to the season, especially here. We probably could have made it a little more comfortable in the first half.
