If Wyc Grousbeck had his way, his family would not have sold its majority stake in the Celtics. But Boston’s former lead governor is excited to remain involved with what he called a “great” new ownership group.

Seated to Bill Chisholm’s left during the new majority owner’s introductory news conference on Thursday, Grousbeck admitted the sale process — which he called “an 18-month journey” that began with his family voting to sell the team — was a difficult experience for him.

“This was a challenge to wrap my head around this,” said Grousbeck, the face of the Celtics’ prior ownership group since it bought the team for $360 million in 2002. “I worked it out with my family.
