SOUTH HAVEN — The village of South Haven just became a safe haven for new mothers and their babies.

That's because the South Haven Fire Department, the Knights of Columbus and Safe Haven Baby Boxes dedicated a brand-new baby box at the South Haven Fire Station on Thursday, where a mom can anonymously, legally and safely surrender her baby instead of abandoning it.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes was founded in 2015 by Monica Kelsey.

It's the 397th baby box installed by Safe Haven since its founding. The organization has saved more than 200 babies — and six have been dropped off in the last 18 days in boxes all over the country, Kelsey said.

In Northwest Indiana, there are Safe Haven baby boxes in Crown Point, Michigan City, Chesterton, Munster, Valparaiso and several other towns,
