Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton confirmed Thursday a 79-year-old man died Sept. 9 in the county jail after he was found unresponsive in his cell.

Robert Winkler told detention center officers moments prior to his death that "he wasn't feeling good," so officers called for medical personnel.

When medical personnel arrived, they found Winkler unresponsive without a pulse, Dutton said.

Winkler was held in the detention center on a $600 warrant from Helena Municipal Court Judge Anne Peterson's office. Winkler was charged in municipal court with misdemeanor assault and, in another case, misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Since his death, both cases have been disposed, according to court records.
