ARCADIA — Santa Anita’s fall season opens Friday and then jumps right into two weekends of Grade I and Grade II stakes matching horses with Breeders’ Cup wins at Del Mar last fall and others trying to join them there in a few weeks.

It’s different from a year ago, when the first Saturday at Santa Anita featured a $1 million purse for the race renamed from the Awesome Again Stakes to the California Crown Stakes and drew a larger and hipper crowd than usual with sideshows by Grammy nominees Shaboozey and Lil Yachty plus food and drink from top L.A. restaurants.

That race’s purse is back down to $300,000 and back to its old name as the Goodwood Stakes, and the headliners are horses, among them Full Serrano, Johannes and Gold Phoenix in races on Saturday, and Cavalieri and Straight No Chaser
