AUGUSTA, Ga. (WABI/WRDW) - A military base in Georgia is being renamed for a Medal of Honor recipient from Maine.
A dedication ceremony will be held Friday.
Fort Gordon is named after Master Sergeant Gary Gordon of Lincoln.
Gordon gave his life in the Battle of Mogadishu on October 3rd, 1993.
His heroism was the subject of the book and movie, “Black Hawk Down.”
Fort Gordon was originally named after a Confederate General.
In 2023, the base was renamed Fort Eisenhower.
In June, President Trump announced the base would go back to its original name, but this time, in honor of Gary Gordon.
Friday’s dedication ceremony can be seen on Fort Gordon’s Facebook page starting at 9 a.m.
