If you were to bet on Canadian politics, the smart money would be on access to “medical assistance in dying” (MAID) continuing to expand.

It’s not just that courts are likely to keep expanding euthanasia (which is what every other country calls MAID). Or that public opinion in Quebec drives much of the debate.

The matter of “advanced directives” authorizing MAID if one loses the capacity for consent is officially illegal, but then Quebec went ahead and allowed them anyway and Ottawa didn’t say boo . And advanced directives have deep and broad nationwide support, according to an Ipsos poll, commissioned by Dying With Dignity Canada published earlier this year: 84 per cent overall in favour, with no less than 77 per cent (in Alberta) in any region.
