Jon Eagle has been a high school football head coach for 33 seasons, including 13 at Camas.

But the only last time Eagle coached against the Papermakers was Oct. 29, 1988.

It was his eighth game as a head coach. He was 29.

Evergreen and Eagle lost to Camas that night 28-21.

Eagle will get his second chance to beat Camas on Friday when his West Linn Lions host the Papermakers.

It will be his 343rd game as a high school head coach. And it will come in his final season as a head coach.

“I’ve heard people say, you just know,” Eagle, now 66, said about retiring. “When you know, you know.”

Between those two meetings as a Camas foe, there have been 262 victories, four state championships (two with Camas, two with West Linn) and countless memories.
