Srinagar- An uneasy calm prevailed in Leh on Thursday as police and paramilitary forces strictly enforced a curfew, a day after violent clashes between protesters demanding statehood and security personnel left four dead and over 80 injured.

At least 50 people have been detained in connection with the unrest that erupted during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) to press for the extension of the Sixth Schedule and statehood for Ladakh.

Officials said protesters indulged in arson and vandalism, including the torching of the BJP office, damage to vehicles, and ransacking of the Hill Council headquarters. A police officer confirmed that the situation in the curfew-hit areas was under control, with no fresh incidents reported.
