FRANCONIA, N.H. (ABC22/FOX44) - The first aerial tramway in North America is planning to upgrade.

According to a press release from the ski resort on Thursday, the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway has now begun structural analysis, an important step in the process towards replacing the current 45-year-old tramway system.

The tramway, which is located within Franconia Notch State Park, first carried people to the mountain's 4080' summit in 1938. The current system, built in 1980, carries passengers more than a mile and up more than 2,000 feet in less than seven minutes.

"Structural analysis in this case is a study... to determine what, if anything, needs to be modified to support the designs and loads of the next-generation tram," said Cannon Mountain General Manager Jace Wirth.
