ATMORE — The State of Alabama carried out its fourth execution of 2025 Thursday evening, putting Geoffrey Todd West to death by nitrogen gas hypoxia for killing a woman during a robbery 28 years ago.

The execution method has been controversial since its first use by the State of Alabama in January 2024. As of West's execution, Alabama has now executed six prisoners via nitrogen gas hypoxia.

West, who was 49 at the time of death, was convicted of capital murder for the killing of Margaret Parrish Berry in Etowah County. He was officially pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m.
